Dancin' in the DMZ

Wow. I'm a misanthrope prone to finding things like this annoying, but instead I enjoyed the hell out of it. I laughed out loud four, five times and thought a few of the juxtapositions were worth every penny it cost to make.

Seriously, watch Matt dance all over the world.

I went looking for a Wonder Twins video. Boy did I find one. Please note the great Ted Knight impression of the narrator, too. Whomever that is really nailed the voice.

Guest post on Pop Critics

Today is my first guest post at Pop Critics. It's a preview of Charlie Jade, premiering on the SciFi channel on Friday, June 6. Trust me when I say, if you're a regular here (TheWife excluded,) you're probably going to love Charlie Jade. Please head on over there and comment on my piece.

While you're there, take a look around. Pop Critics is a great, burgeoning site run by Jason and Mike that tries to focus on *good* popculture. I highly recommend it, despite my presence.

I'll be doing recaps for CJ as well as Burn Notice or Pop Critics this summer.

To bear (bad analogies) with unbearable sorrow

It takes oh so little skill or knowledge to write an op-ed for the Times, or get on the editorial board. At least that's sure how it seems. In today's NYT, Gail Collins has a rambling (not a good adjective for a short piece) editorial about (mostly) the Democratic race, the candidates, and the impact of men close to them - Bill and Jeremiah Wright.

She closes with this:

We’re down to a race between the candidate who claims he will make the political process better but has yet to demonstrate exactly how that works, and the woman who claims she’s the only one who’s powerful enough to take on the Republican forces of darkness. Don Quixote vs. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Both accompanied by their lieutenants — the men who think it’s all about them.
I'm always impressed when someone can show ignorance about pop culture at the same time as ignorance about "high" culture. Neither Sancho Panza nor pick one - Rupert Giles, Xander Harris, Angel, Spike, Riley Finn - was self-serving. Those are all perfect examples of loyal squires, ready to lay down their lives at a moment's notice for their leader.

Not sure with what she was too busy to read Don Quixote while in college. It certainly wasn't mastering essay writing.

Open the Iris, the Toyota's Coming Through

Crap, crap, crap! I need a new cellphone. Not nearly enough resolution on my phone's camera to do this plate justice. Absolutely, without compare, the nerdiest license plate I've ever seen. On a Rav4, driven by a - larger woman - and in a plate holder that indicated she was a heckuva big SG1 fan.

MY DHD

I just feel bad that I *know* what the plate is so nerdy.

How they got here: Buffy the Mohel

It's pretty rare I do this, but I must say this is one of the most awesomest Google searches to hit my little corner of the web in quite a while. From St. Louis, Missouri:

nick brendon circumcised

Really? That's what raises their Spirits in St. Louis? Their over-Arching concern? I'd have the Blues if that were on my mind. Frankly, it should be a Cardinal sin.

Ouch. I'm really sorry. I'm clearly pundrunk.

Poor Xander.

He literally jumped a shark

The "Tempo staff"* at the Chigago Tribune have compiled a list of the 25 worst TV shows of all time. I could go through this item by item and point out how the staff is right or wrong to include a show on the list, but there's little point. Such lists are subjective anyway.

However, I do have to point out their serious lack of understanding of TV history. In discussing Joanie Loves Chachi - truly deserving of list-membership - they say "Scott Baio's addition to Happy Days was a classic jump-the-shark moment". No. See, when Fonz jumped the frakin' shark, that was when they jumped the shark!!!

* "Tempo staff"? What the hell is that? The interns who normally do donut runs get to put out an advertising supplement-slash-weekend entertainment guide? Of is that the Trib's TV Guide section?

Hamas has a Boy Band!

Formed in the summer as part of the arts department of Hamas's domestic security service, the Executive Force, the group has performed for police units around Gaza City.

But Maj Abu Abdu, who also uses his fine voice to call the faithful to prayer at a mosque, outlined ambitious plans for Protectors of the Homeland — to produce their first recordings for distribution, to build a theatre in Gaza City and even to start public dancing.

Forget it Jake, it's America

Jake Halpern's new book is Fame Junkies: The Hidden Truths Behind America's Favorite Addictionwhich "examines why Americans are so obsessed with celebrities and probes some of the more troubling ramifications of this obsession." He was scheduled to talk about it on CNN earlier this week, but...

So it was certainly a delightful irony when, upon my arrival, I was told that my segment had been canceled due to breaking news. "Oh," I said, "What happened?" The technician replied, "Didn't you hear, Britney Spears just lost custody of her kids?"
