Movie Quote Quiz

I've been tagged by Christina.

Look up 15 of your favorite films on IMDb and take a quote from each. List them below. When someone guesses the quote correctly, cross it off the list. NO CHEATING. There are a few gimmes in here, but I think there should be at least one or two that no one's got a shot at.

Leave a comment with your answers.

The Quotes: 15 of My Favorite Films

  1. You know what they say about slugs. They always leave slime in their tracks. Solved by John
  2. You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back. Solved by Carrie
  3. You wanna see the seventh card, stop speaking fucking sputnik! I'm sure you guys were talking about pirogies and snow but let's cut that out. Solved by Carrie
  4. Will you look at that! Look how she moves! It's like Jell-O on springs. Must have some sort of built-in motor or something. I tell you, it's a whole different sex! Solved by John
  5. You all think that the glory happened here in the East, don't you, with Valley Forge and Bunker Hill? Do you know about San Jacinto? Have you heard about the Alamo?
  6. Merlin told me once, "Never be too disturbed if you don't understand what a woman is thinking. They don't do it very often". Solved by Sme
  7. The companionship of a doll is a pleasant thing even for a period of time running into months. But for a close relationship that can last us through all the years of our life, no doll can take the place of aces back to back.
  8. Look, this is an emotional moment for all of us, okay? I know that. Let's not make snap judgments, please. This is clearly-clearly an important species we're dealing with and I don't think that you or I, or anybody, has the right to arbitrarily exterminate them! Solved by David A.
  9. Had my dream again where I'm making love, and the Olympic judges are watching. I'd nailed the compulsories, so this is it, the finals. I got a 9.8 from the Canadians, a perfect 10 from the Americans, and my mother, disguised as an East German judge, gave me a 5.6. Must have been the dismount. Solved by David A.
  10. Well, does it take more guts to twice traverse a staircase in a burning building, or to make a one-time leap into a volcano? Damned if I know, Kemosabe.
  11. I want you to get mad. I don't want you to protest, I don't want you to riot, I don't want you to write to your congressman, because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression, the inflation, the Russians, or the crime in the streets. All I know is that first... You've got to get mad. Solved by John
  12. Yeah, I've been craving burgers, too. Furburgers. Come on, dudes, let's pick up some trim at a strip club. The Doogie line always works on strippers. Solved by Sme
  13. That's right Sweetie, I'm president of Rita Marlowe Productions, Incorporated, but Miss Marlowe is the titular head.
  14. I think we make a real sharp couple of coconuts - I'm dumb, you're shy, whaddaya think, huh?
  15. Come a day there won't be room for naughty men like us to slip about at all. This job goes south, there well may not be another. So here is us, on the raggedy edge. Don't push me, and I won't push you. Dong-luh mah?

Now, of course, we discover the problem with getting tagged when you're an unpopular blogger (and all-around misanthrope.) Who to tag? Hmm. Well, no guarantees these'll get caught, but here goes: Liz, Brian, Ryan, Beckylooo, and Lucy.

Argh. These are too hard!

I think #9 might be from a Woody Allen film.

ok, so.... the only two i can guess at would be
#6. Camalot ?

and

#12. Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.

Am I right?

Wow. I knew a few of these were going to be a bit tough - 1, 2, 5, 8, 13 in particular - but I thought there'd be more low-hanging fruit here. I really wasn't trying too hard to be obtuse, either!

Sme, you are absolutely correct on your two; I'm sure it helped that you know how deep my love for NPH runs!

8. Aliens
9. When Harry Met Sallie

Nice job, David. I spent a little longer picking my Aliens quote, because I really wanted it to be one of Paul Reiser's, too.

I've always thought putting a comedian in an SF/horror/thriller like that was casting genius.

Nope, don't recognize a one of em.

Do some stuff from a kid's movie. I haven't watched anything but kids movies and anime for over 10 years.

Hmm. I'm going to wait until Friday to answer the unanswered, but I'm going to rate my thoughts on the difficulty of the remaining 11. Actually, I'm just going to list them here, from what I believe is the easiest, to what I suspect is the hardest. Of course, my perceptions may have no relationship to anyone else's!

3, 11, 7, 15, 14, 10, 4, 2, 1, 5, 13

I will also say that of the remaining 11, there are actually only two or three semi-obscure movies and even those were major Hollywood flicks, and there are representatives of every decade from the '50s to the current aughts.

# 4 Some Like It Hot
# 1 Angel Heart
# 11 Network

Very nice job, John. As you can see from my earlier comment, I figured the Angel Heart quote was going to be a pretty tough one. That's just not a huge movie.

R.A. Porter said...

TheWife, who sadly won't comment here, just gave me her answers to three of these - #2, #3, and #15. Pity her for knowing these three movies so well because she must watch them over and over again with me.

#2 is Gattaca.

And...that's all I've got.

Carrie said...

I lied. I have another one. I think #3 is Rounders.

And now I'm really done.

R.A. Porter said...

Way to go, Carrie! You pulled one of the toughest ones off the list!

Alright. I'm not quite ready to close out the quotes (Christina did, and I feel toopid for not getting some of those) so instead I'm going to offer some very small hints. However, still no cheating allowed!!!

#5 Won the Oscar for best direction sometime in the '50s.

#7 Won the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy, sometime in the '50s. Also, if you say the line aloud, it should be much easier to figure out.

#10 Was an severely underrated romantic comedy of 1990. Seriously. Go rent it (once you know what it is.)

#13 Is almost impossible for anyone but die-hard Tony Randall fans.

#14 Won the Oscar for best picture sometime in the '70s. It should not have. Most people believe a very different film should have won that year; I believe another film on this list should have won that year.

#15 Film of this decade. Say the line aloud. The rhythms are unmistakable.

R.A. Porter said...

Alright. I'm calling it!

#5 is a tougher one. One of my favorite movies, and my absolute favorite performance out of James Dean (though this line was Rock Hudson's): Giant.

#7 should have been pretty simple, and I'm disappointed that neither Kari, Tosy, or Sme (the first two might have missed this post, in their defense) got it. Marlon Brando. He sings! He dances! He drinks Dulce de Leche! Guys and Dolls.

#10 I figured was medium hard. If you knew the movie, you should be able to get it pretty easily, if not, the "volcano" was a big clue: Joe Versus the Volcano.

#13 was insanely tough: Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?

#14 was actually a tough line from a movie everyone's seen: Rocky.

#15 I figured for sure someone would get, either from the very obvious Joss rhythms of the line, or the Chinese phrase at the end: Serenity.

Damn. That is what I get for not checking your blog. You answer things yourself!

I knew #7 & #10 right away. Knew a couple of the crossed off ones too.

R.A. Porter said...

Yah, I figured you were good for at least three of them. :)
